John Schroeder

John Schroeder is an artist, craftsman and musician. He first exhibited his work in a boutique in Berkley California in 1970. Since then he has been doing business as "Transient Treasures," showing and selling his creations at art festivals, galleries and private shows throughout the states west of the Mississippi. Currently, he is focusing on custom order work.

Schroeder's works include carvings, inlay, musical instruments, furniture and jewelry. He uses rare and unusual materials personally collected during his years of travel and exhibiting. These include burled woods, precious and semi-precious stones, fossilized ivories, shed antler, bamboo, amber, and more. Metals include iron, bronze, copper, silver and gold.

John uses his art to support his other interests that have included developing a homestead in Driftwood, Texas, raising a family and performing music. His interest in music has inspired him to build percussion, woodwind and stringed instruments. His folk instruments are the percussion instruments such as hollow log drums and wooden box drums with skin heads. He also makes a combination shaker/small drums from bamboo. His bamboo flutes are both atonal and tuned to concert pitch.

John's stringed instruments are of concert quality. He made his first dulcimer in 1972, followed by the first guitar in 1973. Since then he has made a mandolin. In 1978 he made his first solid bodied electric guitar and fretless bass. Currently John is focusing on making instruments and has several projects in progress.

Using the highest quality materials available, John designs and builds his stringed instruments with time-tested techniques he learned from experts. The stringed instruments are made from the finest aged maple, mahogany, rosewood, ebony and spruce. Except for the machine-made tuning pegs, fret wire and electronic components, all parts are handmade, including the bridges and nuts.He makes solid body electric as well as acoustic instruments. John's extensive experience in jewelry and cabinet-making give his instruments durable quality, complete with beautiful artistic inlay designs. John also does limited repair work and custom fret board and headstock inlay.

John enjoys producing his own designs, but happily does custom order work of the client's design, or collaborates on the design to arrive at the perfect design for the customer.

John's work is exhibited at the Texas Renaissance Festival for seven weeks each fall, the Kerrville Folk Music Festivals in the summer and fall, and by and annual private invitation show and personal arrangements. To buy or inquire about his products, contact us.

John's wife, Linda, has joined his business, and they have renamed it "Solar Flares Arts," which includes crafts, visual art, character acting and musical performances as "Solar Flares."
